If you can't beat them, join them. That seems to be the motto of tech companies this year.
Struggling Nokia have allied up with Microsoft and now the rumour (via Bloomberg) is that RIM are roping in Google to help them well, beat Google (and of course Apple.) It's a strange partnership, but last year's domination of the smartphone market by Apple and Google has really shook up the industry and I think we'll be seeing more merging and more partnerships as 2011 moves along.
Apparently Research In Motion is developing software that will allow its upcoming BlackBerry PlayBook tablet to run Android applications. It would be a smart move by RIM seeing as one of their main weakness is a poor market.
But are the rumours true? RIM themselves have given no hints.
And when the story first started bubbling up last month CNET senior associate editor Nicole Lee pointed out that it seems rather unlikely RIM would undermine its own app efforts, it’s a fair point but then no one would expect Nokia to drag in a competitor.
Things are changing…
