Google’s Middle East and North Africa Head Of Marketing Is Missing in Egypt

It seems a Google employee has been swept up in the Egyptian chaos.

Wael Ghonim has not been seen since late Thursday in central Cairo which has been hit by waves of anti-government protests.

Though it has now reportedly been restored, Internet access had been cut in the country in an attempt to hamper communications among protesters making it harder for Google to find out what has happened to Wael.

The web-giants said in a statement- “The safety of our employees is very important to Google, so if anyone has any information please call the following UK number: +44 20 7031 3008.”

Google has temporarily closed its office in Cairo to ensure the general safety of its employees however Ghonim (who is based in Dubai) was said to have had travelled to Cairo for “personal reasons.”

Whilst working around the Internet communications restrictions Google had launched a special service which allowed people to dial a telephone number and leave a voice mail which would then be sent on Twitter as a text message.

At least 140 people have died since the demonstrations against Mubarak started so fingers crossed that Ghonim turns up safe and
sound.

An absolute tech junky, I graduated from the University of Manchester with a degree in Computing and now live on the outskirts of Leeds working with you guessed it, Computers. I love all things gadgety but really dislike wires. For those of you who haven’t worked it out the name of the site is a combination of my nickname (Gaj) and the pronunciation ‘Gadget’.
