Knowing exactly what your smartphone is doing has never been so important, we always hear horror stories of mobile users leaving roaming on when they abroad only to find out the following month that they have racked gargantuan data bills.
And this has never been so true especially with phantom data usage on many Windows Phone 7’s. A couple of months ago users were noticing abnormally plump quantities of data usuage when they’re not doing anything.
Granted, there’s lots of stuff on the platform that might need data continuously — email accounts and live tiles, for example — but folks are reporting consumption measuring in multiple megabytes per hour, which can add up pretty quickly: 2MB per hour over a month is nearly 1.5GB, which can be a bummer for anyone with a 2GB data plan.
So, when people started to twig that their Window 7 phone was eating more data than a small server farm – something was wrong.
Well the secret is out, step forward and apologise Yahoo Mail, according to a statement obtained by Microsoft guru Paul Thurrott, a fix is expected in the “coming weeks,” but in the interim, you can mitigate the pain by going into settings and choosing less taxing options for “Download new content” and “Download email from” — say, for example, “manually” and “the last 7 days,” respectively.
At least now you know exactly at whom you should wag your finger at now – shame on you Yahoo.
