Android 3.0 could still come to the new Asus tablet after all.

Yesterday we reported that the highly anticipated Asus tablet will be running on Android 2.3 rather than the latest Google OS Honeycomb (3.0)

With the iPad 2 storm incoming if Google et al want to stand any chance against Apple they need to pump their tabs up with the latest software or else risk putting consumers off who would rather wait for a tablet that does come out the box with 3.0 or opt for Apple who will no doubt give the second generation of their tablet device the newest shiniest iOS around.

Thankfully though it seems Asus are aware of this and the latest news is that their tablet could still come with 3.0 after all.

What has happened here is that Asus have full intention to ship their devices with Honeycomb but they have warned consumers that the company doesn't know when Google will release Android Honeycomb and so it cannot guarantee that Android Honeycomb will be released before its tablets. All they can do is give us the latest OS at the time of the tablet release and they can’t do better than that.

As it stands at the moment the Asus Eee Pad Transformer is hitting the UK around May-June, and the Asus Eee Pad Slider will be following it in Q3 around August. The Asus Eee Pad MeMo on the other hand has no official UK release time but it's likely to arrive around Q3/Q4.

This gives Google plenty of time to release Honeycomb.

What do you think would the lack of 3.0 put you off?

  • I’m definitely looking to check these out in May/June.
One question, isn’t Android 2.3 Gingerbread and 3.0 is Honeycomb?

  • Yes you’re right 3.0 is Honeycomb . My mistake. Just a typo. Cheers.

An absolute tech junky, I graduated from the University of Manchester with a degree in Computing and now live on the outskirts of Leeds working with you guessed it, Computers. I love all things gadgety but really dislike wires. For those of you who haven’t worked it out the name of the site is a combination of my nickname (Gaj) and the pronunciation ‘Gadget’.
