A new update has been revealed for Android App, Google Translate. Users speaking to friends or colleagues in differing languages will be able to simply speak as normal into their phone, and the App will instantaneously translate your words and speak them out loud using text-to-speech software on the receiver's phone.
Google do admit it's still 'experimental', so expect a few bugs if you talk fast, are in a loud environment or happen to come from Yorkshire. And so far it only does Spanish, although Google have an early version of German on the go too, and hope to include other languages in the future.
Available now for free in the Android Market for phones running Android 2.1 or above. For the first time you will be able to hold real-time conversations without the need for someone else sat translating, or breaks between phrases to check your Spanish-to-English phrase book. Until scientists manage to genetically engineer a Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy style Babel Fish it's the next best thing!
