iPad Blamed For Poor PC Sales In Second Half Of 2010

The iPad has been a run away success for Apple and this is because of its amazing diversity of apps that can be used on it. It’s as games machine, a multi-media reader, a web-surfer, a great email client, a digital education tool and pretty much everything else that we once used our PC’s for.

Its been so popular – it has had a serious effect on the sales of traditional PC’s. Business analysts IDC and Gartner both reported that PC sales were much lower than expected; with just a 2.7 – 3.1 per cent year-on-year growth for the sector.

According to researcher David Daoud the blame lies at Apple’s door, he said: “Growth steadily slowed throughout 2010 as weakening demand and competition from the Apple iPad constrained PC shipments”.

Netbooks are also finding it tough going too, and Daoud see’s the slump continuing well into 2011 and beyond. Something that Apple will want to see, as any fall in PC sales essential means a net benefit for Apple – due to the fact that consumers can only really choose between Windows or Mac OS.

We’d expect Android to take a large slice of the cake with loads of Android Tablets being planned for 2011. But Apple are the true beneficiaries.

“This situation is likely to persist in 2011, if not worsen, as a wave of media tablets could put a dent in the traditional PC market” he added.

When it came to manufacturers Lenovo and Toshiba were the two that bucked the trend with around a 21 per cent and 12 per cent growth respectively.

But PC giants including the HP and Acer recorded fallen sales year-on-year and Dell only recorded a “modest” increase.

Are we seeing the end of Microsoft’s home dominance ? Have you made the switch from Windows to Mac and its various OS’s? Let us know below.
