Let's file it under 'R for Rumors', but Google may release the next version of its Android mobile OS in mid-2011. Google Ice Cream or Android 2.4 is likely to be served to you in the months of June or July. However, the company is expected to make an official announcement during its IO conference to be held in the month of May. Apparently, the rumor mill was fired by the spotting of a Sony Ericsson Xperia Arc running the elusive OS, in the Consumer Electronics Show. Although Sony Ericsson was quick to point that the device is not running actual Android 2.4 but had a software corruption issue.
Google is still on with its sweet-dish servings. It announced Gingerbread in December and January brought us the gift of Honeycomb. It is believed that the company is going to keep Honeycomb exclusive to tablets and the OS iteration will not be ported to mobile phones. Although, Ice Cream is most welcome to land on our tables or phones, but let's see how Google tackles with the problem of wide fragmentation. Keep watching this space for more info on Ice Cream.
