Following the recent news that the 3D screen can potentially damage kids eyesight, Nintendo now tell us that the latest edition of the DS handheld gaming console will also damage your patience. 3D games will run the battery down within 3 to 5 hours, and even a regular old 2D game will flatline after just 5 to 8 hours.
Compare this with the previous incarnations – the DSi XL can do a whopping 13 to 17 hours, and even the first DS could get through 10 hours – and it appears to be a step backwards for handheld gaming.
Nintendo President and CEO Satoru Iwata said back in October “it is inevitable that the Nintendo 3DS will be a device which requires more frequent charging than the Nintendo DS” and blames the short life on both the 3D capabilities, and the Wi-Fi connection. Which does make sense, but when you consider that it takes over 3 hours to fully charge the 3DS, you would hope that you’re play time wouldn’t last less time out of the wall socket than in it.
Maybe it’s worth holding out for the 3DSi which will inevitably follow!

Considering that the battery for the 3DS is better then the one for the DSi and DS games on the 3DS will run from 5 to 8 hours It would be impossible for that to be the lowest brightness setting considering the lowest brightness setting on the DSi runs from 9 to 14 hours and I don’t see why DS games would use up more power on the 3DS then they did on the DS. You also have to consider that Nintendo said that the battery of the 3DS will be close to the DSi whose battery length on the max brightness is 3 to 4 hours which is close to the 3 to 5 hour stated for the 3DS. If 3 to 5 hours really was the lowest brightness setting considering that the DSi had 5 brightness levels the highest brightness setting would be close to zero and that would be ridiculous or the 3DS only has one brightness setting like the original DS.
Good point. Honest answer is I do not know and can’t find any further details. I wonder if there is only one brightness setting because of the 3D? Can that work on different light settings when you consider its glassesless?
