Google had long been planning its foray into high speed internet segment. The company is likely to put its plans into concrete form in early 2011, when it starts deploying 'Fiber' to one lucky community picked out of 1,100+ applicant communities.
Google had announced the 'Fiber' project back in February this year. The project has already been established to provide fast internet to around 850 homes of faculty and staff of Stanford University. The current speed of the internet is peaking at One Gigabit per second. The project has certainly met with an overwhelming response. Within a month of its announcement, more than 600 communities applied to be considered for the project.
Google has said that it plans to test out new deployment techniques using its test network. The network will also have "open access" policy, under which the users will be able to choose from a multitude of service providers. Google is going to use faster fiber-to-the-home network for this project.
