Advent Vega: Adobe Flash Player Pulled From Device

The Advent Vega has been the tablet to look out for this Christmas, but the more sceptical among you who may have thought that the device was too good to be true may be on to something. The flash player that was pre-installed onto the device was not properly certified by Adobe and is being pulled from the device until further notice.

A press release regarding the matter from Advent said; “The version of Adobe Flash Player 10.1 installed on the tablet has not completed the required certification tests by Adobe. Adobe certification is a process of testing the Adobe Flash Player on the device to ensure a consistently high user experience and compatibility with common websites e.g. iPlayer and 4oD"¦We do need to obtain a properly certified version of the Adobe Flash Player 10.1 before pre-installing it onto further models. The certification process is currently underway and we estimate this will be complete in the early part of 2011.”

If you already own an Advent Vega, don’t fear your Flash player will not be taken away from you, although you may experience some bugs with it until an update is prepared. If you don’t already have the tablet, and ordered after 13 December there will be no flash player pre-installed on to the device.

In regards to the matter, an Advent spokesperson said: “We do not want to go into the ins and outs of how this occurred - suffice to say we have picked this up and are working with Adobe and Nvidia to certify the Tegra2 implementation of the Flash player"¦We stand behind the quality of the tablet and the current Flash player and we will be providing an upgrade to anyone who requests one as soon as it is available."

This is an unfortunate setback for the otherwise impressive Advent Vega, but it’s good to know that the problem will be solved sometime next year, but users could be waiting a while before they get everything they could have potentially wanted from the tablet. The returns policy after this news has not changed, so don’t expect to be able to give it back just because of the pulled feature. This is ridiculous ! – If you had built your own PC then you could install windows, get to the web, navigate the Adobe website and install Adobe Flash without any form of certification or requirement testing. What is Adobe’s problem ? – When you install software usually it checks the computer and the validity of the install so why has Adobe chosen this route on another more open platform ? –

Also, This seems very odd as I cannot recall ever seeing an Advent Vega with Android Markeplace (unless its had the Modoco 1.4 mod)…. in which case is this the pull you talk about ? Are you also saying that for those who have already purchased an Advent Vega’s that you cannot download Adobe flash 10.1 from another device and copy it to your Vega prior to installing ?

This all seems very fishy, or someone has grabbed the wrong end of the stick !!

An absolute tech junky, I graduated from the University of Manchester with a degree in Computing and now live on the outskirts of Leeds working with you guessed it, Computers. I love all things gadgety but really dislike wires. For those of you who haven’t worked it out the name of the site is a combination of my nickname (Gaj) and the pronunciation ‘Gadget’.
