It was a good run for the many pirates of LimeWire, but the massive P2P client was shotdown by the RIAA navy a little while a go now. If you were expecting a big legal return like Napster however, think again as LimeWire’s only legit store is also sinking fast (ok I’ll give the pirate metaphors a break for now).
The LimeWire Store which actually legitimately sold music (who knew?) is reported to be closing down on 31st December, and is currently taking no new customers. If you have any money left on your account make sure to spend it soon because you won’t be able to get it back.
In a rather more ironic twist, the illegal LimeWire version is being pirated itself, giving a full working premium version to people who are still desperate to get their free music from their favourite client. It seems that it’s catching on because the official LimeWire Group have already issued a cease-and-desist to the scoundrels who have been distributing the software.
So LimeWire is going down for good legal and illegal. It’s a big turn in the battle against piracy, even if it is a rather futile one.
