According to a report released by Ofcom, Britons are among the early adopters of technology and tend to spend more moolah online than any other European country. The report has ranked the countries on the basis of their performance under several categories such as adoption of social networking, use of new TV technologies, Broadband penetration and smartphone usage. Britain has been ranked third behind Italy and Spain for smartphone access. There are 18 smartphone subscribers for every 100 people in the UK. Italy leads the pack with 26 subscribers per 100 of its residents.

The report also suggests that Britons are getting cozier with online shopping. In past six months, an average Briton made 14 online purchases. This figure is more than double the number of purchases made by the residents of other major European countries. Only Poland surpassed this figure, with per capita 19 online purchases to its credit. However, Britons hold the top spot firmly when it comes to the value of online purchases. UK spent £1,031 per capita on online purchases, whereas the runner-up French spent £595 only.
