Subsciption-Based BBC iPlayer For iPad Going Global

The BBC is no doubt one of the prides of Britain, and one of their better decisions for viewers was to bring the convenient on-demand service,BBC iPlayer to us. Well it seems we are becoming the nation of sharing as the BBC is planning to take it’s content abroad via the iPad.

BBC Worldwide are planning to bring a subscription-only global iPlayer for interested parties outside the UK, with the service expected to be first piloted in the US. The focus at the moment is purely on the Apple’s iPad with no signs of any other device offering the service any time soon.

The decision behind purely using Apple’s iPad was explained by MD of BBC.com Luke Bradley-Jones who said the tablet “provides such great potential to develop a truly interactive on-demand service”.

It seems the overseas service is not just going to be a service which shows off the BBC, and is instead likely to show much more British content from third-parties. Bradley-Jones said that “The BBC has an advantage in that we can create a branded best-of-British service, showcasing not just the BBC.” No further details on payments or how this will be managed has been given at the moment unfortunately.
