Kuwait has limited the public use of Digital SLRs to accredited journalists only. According to a local media report, three government ministries have banned the use of single lens reflex cameras in the public. These ministries are Ministry of Information, Ministry of Finance and Ministry of Social Affairs. The ban was implemented late last week. However, the saving grace is that mobile phones and smaller digital cameras have been spared. The Kuwaiti government has yet to issue a statement regarding this ban.
Kuwait was recently given the top ranking among all Gulf nations for ensuring the freedom of its press. Interestingly, all Kuwaiti news media are expected to obtain permission from the Ministry of Information. A Kuwaiti newspaper has claimed that Digital SLR may have been banned because these cameras seem too intrusive. The real reason behind the ban has not been disclosed and we hope that the ban does not extend to smaller cameras. We would not want people to be denied the pleasure of recording their joyous moments.
