Earlier this year, the Pentagon announced that it was 'loosening its restrictions' on social networking, and would allow soldiers to use services such as Facebook and Twitter – as long as they did so wisely.
It seems they had too much trust because by the look of things, some dopey pilots have been pasting their location all over the web.
The Air Force is warning its troops not to use location-based services such as FourSquare, Facebook Places and Gowalla because they could let their location slip into wrong hands. (There are actually FourSquare check-in points in Iraq and Afghanistan.)
In an internal document sent to commanders, it points out that “careless use of these services by airmen can have devastating operations, security and privacy implications.” Similar warnings may be circulated amongst the Army and Marines next week.
Personally I'm a little worried that some of the military are whipping out their iPhone's and nonchalantly tracking their locations but I guess they're only human after all.
