Will The PlayStation 3 Outsell the Xbox 360 By 2012?

The PS3 will outsell the Xbox 360 worldwide bye the end of 2012. This is what analyst Jessie Divnich of EEDAR (Electronic Entertainment Design and Research) has predicted on the current-generation console war, giving fanboys of each console a little more to have a tiff over. Although Microsoft are still very much ahead of Sony in terms of sales (easily in the thousands), Sony are slowly but surely closing the gap between the two competing consoles despite the PS3 originally losing them money.

In an interview with Indusrty gamers, Divnich said that “Worldwide, Sony will eventually take the lead from Microsoft, likely by the end of 2012… North America is a tougher challenge, and as we have seen lately, Microsoft’s lead is widening… I don’t know if the PS3 will ever overtake the Xbox 360 in North America. Maybe 2014? 2016? We do know the PS3 has incredible long-term value as a Blu-ray player, much like the PlayStation 2 did as a DVD player. But with strong competition coming from the digital front, one has to wonder if the PS3 will receive long retail legs like its predecessor did”.

Gamers arguing over which console they believe superior is a popular topic on many gaming forums and a lot of the time the big differences are brought up, a favourite being that the PS3 has the longer-lasting blu-ray player and the Xbox 360 simply not having one (and Microsoft doesn’t seem to be changing their mind on this stance any time soon).

Another main factor which builds up the divide and helps gamers choose which consoles they prefer is of course what console-exclusive games the PS3 and Xbox 360 have available, with the Halo series for example being a popular choice to talk about when it comes to the Xbox 360. However, both consoles hold strong games in their favours and it’s an argument which can tend to go around in circles.

With the recent release of new peripherals for each console – the Kinect for Xbox 360 and Move for PS3 – we could start seeing a greater change in sales over time depending on the success of each and it seems this generation of consoles will be going strong for a few years yet. Could the PS3 ever reach the peak that it’s predecessor the PS2 dominated on?
