Is Apple Working on an Integrated SIM for iPhone 5?

With the incredible likeliness of the iPhone 5 arriving sometime next year (most likely a June release, considering Apple's product cycle), rumour and speculation has been going around as to what the next-generation iPhone could be packing. The latest in these rumours suggest that the iPhone 5 will have an integrated SIM, which would allow Apple themselves to assign networks to handsets directly for their customers.

There are reports that this technology is currently under work from the Apple team, and would be an integrated chip in the iPhone, which holds subscriber identification information.

If this kind of technology were to catch on it could see the end of SIM cards as we know them. The system however, could make the process of purchasing a mobile phone online or from stores much easier, and give more control to customers over their devices.

One huge downside for some high street stores however could mean that they could become almost useless to be selling the device (particularly network-specific stores), when customers can just as easily obtain any networked device online. This would particularly hit the stores hard since any new Apple iPhone is a sure money-maker thanks to its massive popularity. What do you think of the concept of an integrated SIM chip in your mobile device?

There are some advantages and downside of this one. Though i would love it if it’s integrated to that snatchers will have a 2nd thought of stealing your phone.

An absolute tech junky, I graduated from the University of Manchester with a degree in Computing and now live on the outskirts of Leeds working with you guessed it, Computers. I love all things gadgety but really dislike wires. For those of you who haven’t worked it out the name of the site is a combination of my nickname (Gaj) and the pronunciation ‘Gadget’.
