Facebook Campaigns to Sabotage X-Factor Re-Emerge

Thanks to the massive success of last year’s massive Facebook campaign to get Rage Against the Machine’s hit song Killing in the Name to number 1 in the UK charts, our country got an opportunity to give a big ‘up yours’ (to put it nicely) to X-Factor, Simon Cowell and generic cookie cutter pop acts that emerge in the holiday season just to make a cool million on the christmas number 1 – we even got a free gig from the incredible band that took the top spot earlier this year. So, don’t sound too surprised that people are trying once again to use the medium of Facebook to get another year in a row of no X-Factor Christmas number 1 (power to the people!).

Oh wait never mind that whole meaning seems to be lost, as it seems one of the strongest campaigns to say ‘up yours’ to X-Factor this year is to vote for one of their gimmicky (another way of saying awful) contestants Wagner Carrilho to win the show (isn’t the idea that X-Factor doesn’t make money?).  However, taking a different perspective, this may seem to be a good way to sabotage the show on a different level, giving them an awful winner which would force them to sign a contract with him and then hopefully the huge numbers which voted this man to win don’t buy whatever awful thing emerges for Christmas number 1. It’s perfect.

In case you haven’t heard of the man, Wagner Carrilho is a 54 year old former PE teacher and martial artist from Brazil who has somehow gotten through the show thanks to charisma, and funniness (some may say cringeyness) with light-hearted off-key performances. The Facebook campaigns for Wagner to win the X-Factor are in their thousands, however this has got nothing on Rage Against the Machines campaign which easily got into the hundreds of thousands, but with so many copy-cat campaigns this year round, we are likely to be seeing no real impact compared to last year and adamant X-Factor fans are likely to get what they want this year.

Facebook has many different campaigns for this years Christmas number 1, but have any stood out to you this year? Let us know your finds in the comments.

  • Stop wasting you’re time on things like this, turn the channel if you don’t like it!! Allow the people who like x factor to enjoy it & stop trying to push your views on everyone else!!

@ John: Likewise! Let those who object to the concept of the manufactured, moulded pop of x-factor have their right to vote too. It is a democracy after all. Or would you prefer we lived in North Korea where only the establishment and their supporters have any say??!

An absolute tech junky, I graduated from the University of Manchester with a degree in Computing and now live on the outskirts of Leeds working with you guessed it, Computers. I love all things gadgety but really dislike wires. For those of you who haven’t worked it out the name of the site is a combination of my nickname (Gaj) and the pronunciation ‘Gadget’.
