Amazon adds new feature to Kindle and brings periodicals to smartphones

Amazon certainly knows how to shift E-readers. The Kindle's seen impressive sales figures after a strategic price cut by Amazon earlier this year, and now, surprise, surprise, just before Christmas, the things getting a little 'update' which makes it even more tempting for those who are yet to delve into the E-reading world.

Amazon is set to let users of its Kindle E-reader share digital books. Amazon said the new feature will be available later this year and will allow kindle users to share books with each other for 14 days (but the person lending the book will not have access to it during the loan period.)

The ability to share books has been a feature in Barnes & Noble’s Nook since its release in October 2009 and now a year later, Amazon are using the idea for their own E-reader.
But they were quick to point out that not all e-books will be available for lending.

“This is solely up to the publisher or rights holder, who determines which titles are enabled for lending.”

E-reader aside, they also announced that it will make newspapers and magazines readable on the Kindle software (as opposed to just the Kindle E-reader which is how it is now.) Amazon will roll out the periodicals feature first to Apple products in the coming weeks, adding Android smartphones and other devices later.

With a new Nook expected October 26, we'll probably be seeing some more changes to Kindled in the coming weeks.
