Companies Innovate to Abuse their Employees

We all love our shiny gadgets and fast speed services. But sometimes, it is eye opening to look behind the glossy façade and see theplight of people who actually bring our little objet d'sire. Although, the news about abused workers in Foxconn factories are nothing new, a new leaked report has claimed that up to 50 percent workers in plants were facing one or the other kind of abuse. It also said that the interns were at higher risk of abuse, as they are made to work for longer hours without corresponding compensation. They are also made to work without any formal contract.

Closer to home, we have the story of T-Mobile UK and Orange UK. Their merger, as expected, led to some layoffs. Nearly 1, 200 people had to lose their jobs pursuant to the merger. And as if the agony of losing the job is not bad enough, the workers were treated to a humiliating notification as well. The workers, who are likely to lose their jobs by the end of the holiday season, were shown traffic lights to tell them about their job status. Apparently, red light indicated that their jobs are being axed, whereas yellow color showed that they need to re-apply for their jobs. Well, we are sure there are better ways of intimating employees about their job loss.

I love all things gadgety but really dislike wires. For those of you who haven’t worked it out the name of the site is a combination of my nickname (Gaj) and the pronunciation ‘Gadget’.
