It seem that tech news is all about video streaming on game consoles today (well that and the storm of Windows Phone 7 announcements.) Earlier on we unveiled that the Xbox 360 is finally getting IPTV in the form of AT&Ts U-verse on Friday, which will bring live streaming to the box. But IPTV is old news for Sony; they've moved onto films.
Lovefilm is coming to the PS3. The movie rental company announced their app for the Sony device via a video on the official PS3 YouTube channel.
As of next month, PS3 owners will be able to order a movie using the Lovefilm app, and choose to either stream it via their games console or order the DVD to be delivered. I guess you would just order on your PC if you were going to have DVDs delivered but anyway the point is you can stream.
On demand film streaming, come on everyone, "Yeeey!"
It's got to be enough to excite some PS3 users.
And speaking of IPTV, Lovefilm is also rumoured to be developing a similar app for YouView, the BBC-backed internet-connected set-top box, due to go on sale early next year. The IPTV service, which is being positioned by its owners, ITV, Channel 4, Five, TalkTalk, BT and the BBC, as the ‘next generation of Freeview’ will ‘allow apps and channels to co-exist on the same TV platform.’
However, YouView may be in hot water before it even gets up and running. Media regulator, Ofcom, is believed to be preparing to "launch an investigation into the broadcasters' plan to bring iPlayer-like services to televisions across the country" after a series of complaints from jealous, sorry, rival services, such as Sky and Virgin.

I’ve had lovefilm on my PS3 for about two weeks and so far it’s been exellent. There’s two tabs in the menu, one in which you can add a movie to your postal rental list from lovefilms huge library of films and another one for films you can watch online. There’s about 100 films in each genre which range from scifi, horror, drama, thriller, action, sports, TV and special interests. I would have preferred more titles but for nine quid a month it’s a good bargain. The quality of the movies is what you’d expect from a service which is streamed, most being of DVD quality. All in all the service is worth it.
Have subscribed about a month ago to £9.99 per month. I run a Virgin Media 20Mb connection and frequently receive live connections speeds of 13-15Mb – more than enough for a decent stream. Via a laptop the streaming is perfect but via the PS3 it’s atrocious. Here’s why:
– Freezing! It started off fine – for the first few movies, then a while later (ciouple of weeks in) it got stupid. The movie would take 4-5minutes to start then it would pause every 1-2 minutes for about 10seconds. RUBBISH.
– Navigating the movie – this is infuriating. Press ‘X’ to pause the movie then ‘X’ again to start it. Thats fine but don’t put the controller down because you may press R2 or L2 and then it’ll start rewinging or fast forwarding. You can’t cancel this! It just keeps on going! You have to rewind or ff back to where the yellow bar is and try and hit ‘Play’ again at JUST the right position
– Menu system – is shocking. So slow, glitchy, logs you out, search is slow, etc etc. Also, the rotation of new movies is appaling. This needs to be upgraded asap.
– Quality of movies is pretty bad – not unwatchable – but moreso designed for Laptops and small screens. I have a 50″ in the living room and it just looks shocking – really blurry (i.e. text from the Credits is hard to read)
– Also, takes ages to load the bloody thing! I’m not entirely sure what’s actually happening at this point – if it’s just logging me into the account then why take so long?
– Viewing your Physical rentals – not intuative – not easy and yet again slow.
I love this service as it’s cheaper than Virgin Movies on demand (hence the reason for me trying it) so will stick it out for a couple more months but if it doesn’t improve I’m gone!
