Twitter Hack Exposed: Be More Wary With Your Private Messages

If you're putting sensitive information into the internet its only natural that you should always be as careful and wary as possible, but it seems that Twitter users need to be a little more on guard than usual after a new hack has been discovered which can be used to see your private messages.

Gary-Adam Shannon of Search Engine Watch has managed to explain a method of hacking which exploits the Twitter API. The method involves using a WordPress plug-in which allows users to login to a blog with their Twitter details.

Someone with malicious intent could tweak the code to gain access to your recent tweets and direct messages. The full explanation uses a lot of code but if you're more interested in Shannons explanation you can read about it here.

This problem clearly needs to get Twitter to be more aware of what third-parties can do with their API and also needs to make their users more aware of the risks. However, if you're worried about the hacking yourself you can help yourself by not using applications you don't completely trust and to not give read/write permission to apps.

An absolute tech junky, I graduated from the University of Manchester with a degree in Computing and now live on the outskirts of Leeds working with you guessed it, Computers. I love all things gadgety but really dislike wires. For those of you who haven’t worked it out the name of the site is a combination of my nickname (Gaj) and the pronunciation ‘Gadget’.
