Overview

Android OS is fast gaining ground. So, it is to be seen which Android-running handset is beating the other contenders. Although, HTC has long been an influential handset maker in the Android market, but the company is now getting some serious competition. Lately, the competition had been fierce between HTC Desire and Samsung Galaxy S. Today, we will dissect these phones and pick a winner. So, here we go!

Comparison

Appearance

Let's admit it. While picking a phone, its functionality is of the utmost importance, but nobody can deny the importance of the looks either. Desire is smaller and slightly thicker than Galaxy S. Although, at 135g, it does weigh slightly more than Galaxy S, which tips the scale at 118g. So, in this category we would pick Galaxy S as our winner for more real estate at lesser weight.

Display

Both Desire and Galaxy S sport sharp and colorful AMOLED screens. However, Samsung claims its screen to be brighter and more energy-efficient. It also claims its screen to be less reflective in sunlight. We beg to differ. Both the screens have almost equally good performance to boast about and are scratch resistant. However, Galaxy has 4 inches screen in comparison to Desire's 3.7 inches screen. Since display real estate comes at a premium, we will pick Galaxy as Our winner. Apart from this, Galaxy S features Swype text input and TouchWiz UI 3.0, whereas Desire uses its inhouse HTC Sense UI. Both have their pros and cons, so in this category, things basically boil down to personal choice.

Storage

This category is an easy peasy one. Galaxy S comes in 8GB and 16GB memory options, whereas Desire maxes out at 521MB. Although, both phones feature MicroSD card slot and thus have expandable memory. Still, anyday, we will prefer bigger native memory. So, Galaxy S wins the category hands down.

Technical Nitty-Gritty

Both the phones feature 1GHz processors, which has lately become a benchmark for mobile phones. However, Samsung chose to use its own processor called Hummingbird S5PC110 model whereas Desire opted for Qualcomm Snapdragon processor. This may not mean much but Galaxy S is equipped with Bluetooth3.0, Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n and features DLNA, which makes it more entertainment device friendly. However, these features are conspicuously missing in Desire. So, our vote will again go to Galaxy S.

As for the camera, both phones have reasonably good phone with 5MP resolution and autofocus facility. There are other common features such as face & smile detection and geotagging. However, Samsung is able to record videos at faster speed of 30 fps whereas Desire records videos at 15 frames per second. Another point in Galaxy S is its front facing camera, which makes it possible to use video chat. Desire, on the other hand, is technically capable of making video calls, but since does not have a front facing camera, it will be difficult to make a video call.

We Say

So seems like, Galaxy S has trumped Desire in every segment, but this does not negate the fact that Desire is a top of the line phone as well. In any case, both the phones were neck to neck in each category. So, although, we are going to pick Samsung Galaxy S as our winner, we are pretty sure that you cannot go wrong with either of the phones. Do you think differently? Let us know your views!
