Sony Alpha A100

Overview

Sony has made its proud leap into the digital single lens reflex (D-SLR) camera market with the introduction of the Digital SLR-A100 system. The system combines advanced SLR features with other Sony digital imaging innovations.

The camera is an instant classic with the top-quality 10 MP DSLR system camera that builds on a two-decade legacy of Minolta photographic leadership. However, what is not so classic about this baby is, it is boasting with amazing innovation such as the high-sensitivity shooting with Super SteadyShot® in-camera image stabilization, Dynamic Range Optimizer to automatically increase detail in bright and dark picture areas, new Anti-Dust technology to keep the CCD imager clean for better pictures, and Eye-Start Autofocus system for faster camera response.

Review

Why should we get excited about another digital SLR camera when there are other great cameras such as the Nikon and Canon who lead the way? Read on and we’ll tell you why.

When you switch on the camera it is very quick to respond and the sensor switches on the bright viewfinder and focuses the camera as you bring your eye to it allowing you to respond quickly and not missing out on them important photo opportunities.

The problems that many photographers have found that when changing their lenses dust and other unwanted particle tend to stray into CCD sensor inside. However, Sony has impressively limited this problem by the vibrating the anti static coated CCD to shake free any particles when the camera is switched on so we can say goodbye to the little nasties!

You don’t have to worry about of the camera shaking when you hold the camera as you have the Super SteadyShot function which amazingly moves the sensor to balance any external movement.

Images can be captured as a JPEG for the more mainstream users but for the more memory fanatics RAW files, up to ISO1600 light sensitivity, which requires special software. The Sony Alpha offers 10 megapixels and the results are rich in detail and colour to accommodate for the more particular user.

However, when the shot is taken, unlike the Canon 400D, it makes a loud sound which many photographers may complain as it could ruin them moments when your doing a spot of bird watching and don’t want your subject to be aware! Also when holding it, the Sony Alpha has plastic build and feel and does not feel as robust compared to its competitors.

The Gaj-it Verdict

  • Design: 8/10
  • Usability: 9/10
  • Features: 9/10
  • Love: Fast and responsive, easy to use, excellent detail and results.
  • Loathe: Load shutter, uninspiring design and expensive investment for the mainstream user.

We say: With its ease of use and its anti dust and shake innovation; it’s hard to say anything wrong about this D-SLR. However, this camera will come at a price and if you’re prepared to make that extra expensive investment then this camera is the one for you.
