VLC for iPad: Apple finally opens up the App Store

With the announcement from Apple, a couple of weeks ago, that they were going to soften the rules on their overly protective app store, today mark to the start of new era. The much-loved media player VLC has just popped up on the App store for free.

Why is the is so important hear you ask ? Well, this sort of app would not have happened during the archaic rule of Apple a year ago. And has only been approved since their new approach has been implemented.

The VLC app could well be a future number one as it handles almost all of the common video formats and let you sling them onto your iPad via iTunes without needing to convert them.

Most PC and Apple users will be more than familiar with the media player. Especially Apple folk as they have struggled with rather rubbish Quicktime for a while, which just doesn't play many common file formats, so many Apple users use the VLC as their primary media player – and now you'll be able to use it on the iPad for free.

The softening of Apple's stance over Apps is such a welcomed change to the Apple we know and sometimes hate. It will possibly open the door for an app than can use the new Airplay feature with Apple TV for the ultimate media sharing system. Let’s just keep are fingers crossed.

We’ve downloaded the app and are please to tell you that it works fantastically - we have transferred MKV's, AVI's and some Xvid's and they all transferred without a hitch and played flawlessly on our 16GB iPad. Unfortunately there is no sign of it for the iPhone or iPod Touch yet.

Let us know your thoughts about this new open Apple? And how you’re finding the new app.

  • This looks great news for video fans. It’s just a pity I won’t be able to make use of it with my still-state-of-the-art iPhone 3GS :(

  • Andrew Rafter

Not sure why they haven’t done it for the iPhone – hopefully they will rectify this soon.

  • Yeah I hope they create a iPhone version soon too :) It’d be great.

I love all things gadgety but really dislike wires. For those of you who haven’t worked it out the name of the site is a combination of my nickname (Gaj) and the pronunciation ‘Gadget’.
