Barack Obama wants kids to make video games.

Mr cool Barack Obama as you know, is the President of the USA, he also uses a BlackBerry. That's pretty cool. Though to be honest most politicians use BlackBerry's (it is a businessman's phone after all) but for some reason it's cool when Obama has one. So what's he done now to get down with the kids (and the geeks)?

He has given his blessing to a challenge which is open to both children and professional developers – aimed at getting kids designing educational video games.

The National STEM (science, technology, engineering & math) Video Game Challenge is hoping to get American children more interested in learning about those fields, and thinks that educational video games could be just the ticket. Nothing like sneaking a bit of education into a game. I'm thinking Wii 'science labs' how about you?

And why is Obama getting behind STEM? Because, “Our success as a nation depends on strengthening America’s role as the world’s engine of discovery and innovation,” says the President himself.

He continues, “I applaud partners in the National STEM Video Game Challenge for lending their resources, expertise, and their enthusiasm to the task of strengthening America’s leadership in the 21st century by improving education in science, technology, engineering and math.”

There are two prizes on offer, one for middle school students, another for professional developers, with a deadline for entries set at January 5.

Maybe if children get more into engineering and technology they'll grow up and stop things like BP's oil disaster from happening, you never know.

An absolute tech junky, I graduated from the University of Manchester with a degree in Computing and now live on the outskirts of Leeds working with you guessed it, Computers. I love all things gadgety but really dislike wires. For those of you who haven’t worked it out the name of the site is a combination of my nickname (Gaj) and the pronunciation ‘Gadget’.
