iPhone 4 Free Bumpers: Case Program App being Pulled

The iPhone 4 got off to a pretty bad start with its antenna issues disrupting the smartphone's signal, but Apple were quick to respond with videos of them testing signal strength against other smartphones. However, what most people noticed was that Apple were offering one of various coloured bumpers for free for anyone who asked.

The way to obtain the bumper was to simply download the free iPhone 4 Case Program app, log in to it, select the bumper you want, and then submit. However, it seems Apple has changed their minds on this, deciding to put the application to an end after making the following announcement:

We know that the iPhone 4 antenna attenuation issue is even smaller than we originally thought. A small percentage of iPhone users need a case, and we want to continue providing them a Bumper case for free. For everyone else, we are discontinuing the free case program on all iPhone 4s sold after September 30, 2010. We are also returning to our normal returns policy for all iPhone 4s sold after September 30. Users experiencing antenna issues should call AppleCare to request a free Bumper case.

The issue being "smaller" than they thought is likely either the case has not been widely requested, or not many complaints about the fault itself have been made or noticed.

So if you've been putting off getting that bumper for your iPhone 4 or thought you might not need one, you might as well get one before they stop becoming so easily available. But if you buy an iPhone 4 after the 30th, don't panic if you are experiencing the problem. Simply get in touch with AppleCare and let them know. Have you got your bumper or did you never notice the signal problem? Did you get the bumper regardless? Leave your thoughts below.

An absolute tech junky, I graduated from the University of Manchester with a degree in Computing and now live on the outskirts of Leeds working with you guessed it, Computers. I love all things gadgety but really dislike wires. For those of you who haven’t worked it out the name of the site is a combination of my nickname (Gaj) and the pronunciation ‘Gadget’.
