The smartphone market at the moment is fierce and RIM will want to establish themselves well and truly as one of the top dogs of the industry. We've seen some changes to BlackBerry recently in the form of updates to the Facebook app, app market and messenger.
Handset wise, the Torch 9800 is about to hit stores. Following its global announcement and US release earlier this month, the latest handset from RIM has now appeared on a number of UK online retail websites with a launch date of this October.
The phone is set to feature a massively updated OS, the classic BB QWERTY keyboard, a captive touchscreen, a new media player and some tweaks to the famous BlackBerry integrated email system.
It should be an impressive phone and a show of what RIM can offer the booming smartphone world. Obviously the latest, flagship, touchscreen BlackBerry is not going to be cheap and the current UK prices popping up on websites are mind boggling.
The eXpansys website (one of the first to list the BlackBerry Torch 9800) lists a hefty £569.99 price tag whilst Play.com are offering pre-orders of the new device (SIM-free) for £479.99. The RRP is said to be £499.99
At a higher price than some laptops BlackBerry better be offering something pretty special. Hopefully once the Torch is established the features that prove popular will be chucked on a cheaper model like a new curve and released at a more realistic price.
