When word of the RIM Blackpad first started to spread a few people were anticipating the possibility of RIM using the Android OS others said they'd stick with their own BB OS and now Bloomberg are claiming that the company intends to run software built by QNX on the tablet device.
RIM acquired infotainment specialist QNX Software Systems back in April for $200 million and now reports are claiming that RIM intends to run software built by QNX on its upcoming tablet effort, the BlackPad.
This would explain RIM’S interest in QNX however you've got to wonder why RIM isn't simply upscaling its BlackBerry 6 operating system into the tablet space. One of the sources of this lagtest BB rumour suggest that’s it's due to legacy code hanging around in the still new OS, making it easier to just start afresh when building the slate’s software package.
QNX is famous for its efficient real time-operating system which is used in navigation systems, cardiac monitors and crusher tanks. So if the rumours are true this could be a smart move from RIM. Other manufacturers trying to break into the tablet market are mainly focusing on features, cramming as much as they can into their devices, like Flash, HDMI, SD, USB, webcams and the like.
If they manage to make a super fast and efficient QNX OS then it will help them stand out from the crowd and appeal to the business market who are looking for good quality, high-end products i.e. what the BlackBerry smartphones do.
