PlayStation Move Vs Microsoft Kinect: PS Move Set to Dominate Sales in the Motion Controller Wars

As the release dates of the PlayStation Move and Xbox's Kinect are being anxiously awaited, the question frying on everyone’s lips is, which motion controller will be more successful.

Well, it looks like this question has an early answer, because after a UK survey carried out by sales website Groupola, it looks like the motion-controlled gaming wars between Sony's PlayStation Move and Microsoft's Kinect is showing signs for an overwhelming Sony victory in sales. The survey, which questioned 2000 UK gamers, found out that 77% of PlayStation 3 owners intend to get hold of Move and that just 23% of Xbox 360 owners are willing to get the rather expensive, controller-less Kinect.

Mark Pearson, Managing Director of Groupola puts the results down to the Kinect's hefty price tag of £129.99 as opposed to the PlayStation Move's £49.99 one. However, creator of the PlayStation Move and Sony EyeToy Dr Richard Marks puts it down to the limitation of controller-less gaming.

When speaking to T3, Dr Marks said, "I think it depends if you believe that controller-less is necessarily better which I don't believe. I created the technology for EyeToy which we made a controller-less device and it was really neat and it enabled new things but it is not the end-all, be-all in control, we entered limits with that and I think without a controller you run into limits of what you can enable."

He also added: "You can do things like track the whole body, you can have dancing and exercise but a lot of the core gameplay ideas that we want to see happen and want to enable just weren't possible with only a camera. We would have done that, we look at as much as we could do with just a camera but it wasn't the right choice we felt."

A likely increase in sales will also be given to Sony as the PlayStation Move's September release in the UK gives it an approximate two month head-start against Microsoft's Kinect. Will the PlayStation Move dominate the motion-controller sales, or will the Kinect prove less limited and better value for money than previously thought? Do you own a PlayStation 3 or Xbox 360 and find yourself struggling with the decision to buy these upcoming motion-controllers? Leave your thoughts below.

  • Sony’s tried a controllerless peripheral. It was a complete failure, I can expect to see not much better from the Kinect… i wouldn’t pre-order the Move either, not until Resident Evil 5 is out.
