Media Molecule have announced that Little Big Planet has now officially gone gold and is set for worldwide release on the 21st October 2008.
Since the announcement of Little Big Planet’s development and the European launch of the Playstation 3 in March 2007 , casual gamers and the hardcore alike have been intrigued to see how the British developer will deliver this unusual gaming experience. Little Big Planet (LBP) sees you taking the control of ‘Sackboy’ or ‘Sackgirl’; so called because of their appearance, to create (and compete in) highly modifiable environments. Games can be played cooperatively, individually or in a competitive mode with points being accrued for level performance as well as time taken.
A lot of effort has been put into the physics of LBP, in allowing the player to create, manipulate and operate a whole host of different objects and materials, each with their own properties. Hazards and dangers, such as fire or ice, will also be applicable to any surface and prolonged exposure to either will result in the death of your ‘sack’ persona. Fear not, you’ll spawn again somewhere close-by.
The onus of this game is strongly on creativity and achieving variety in terms of level design, and within an environment such as the Playstation Network (PSN) the multi-player aspects will be key to providing long lasting entertainment from a game such as this. Fittingly then, you can upload your own favourite levels for all the world to share, as well as playing through the offerings of your fellow LBP-ers
As a treat for early purchasers, there will be a free space suit costume available for your Sackboy, but you’ll have to move quickly - it’s only available during the first week of release. If you’re a true LBP devotee you can even buy a ‘I was there for the first week’ t-shirt. It’s been a long time coming but we will finally find out if LBP will live up to the hype, and have been worth the wait.
