HTC Hero users on 3 want Android 2.1

As everyone else gets excited about Froyo, HTC Hero owners have been left in the dust, waiting for an update to Android 2.1.

In July, Orange customers started a Facebook lobbying group putting pressure on both Orange and HTC for an update to 2.1 and succeeded. Eventually the two companies buckled under pressure and released the statement 'We apologise for the delay in Orange Hero customers receiving their Éclair update. Testing the update across European markets took longer than anticipated. However, we hope to receive final approval by the end of the week and Orange handsets should start updating from next weeks.' A good result for Orange customers.

And now history is repeating itself. This time it is Three Mobile customers frustrated by the lack of any 2.1 action on their HTC Hero handsets and have thus set up their own Facebook lobby group lambasting 3mobile for 'refusing to give any information regarding the 2.1 update to their customers with HTC Hero mobiles' and 'not giving any definitive answers to questions regarding the update.'

It seems that there could be a glimmer of hope too, with '@ThreeMobileBuzz' (on Facebook) saying that 'Three have always planned to have update ready for end of July……They expect it to be out of their testing process by the end of this week and then HTC will be making it available shortly afterwards'

It's a small victory for Three customers, who have to be satisfied with 2.1 at a time when all eyes are on 2.2. It seems Three have upset a lot of its customers with many saying that the customer service is not good enough.

  • Thank’s for the link. An interesting read.

  • i recieved my update yesterday ,android 2.1 is better than the old one cuz has improved music player and better google maps and also includes google maps navigation which the same like a normall tom tom so thats usefull. but it sure took 3 a long time to deliver android 2.1.

  • my hero ‘asked’ me to update it over a week ago, but at a really inconvenient time so I told it to remind me later, expecting it to ‘ask’ again after 24 hours or something. I’ve not had anything since. Can anyone tell me why or who I might need to contact to be offered my update once more? HTC or Three?

An absolute tech junky, I graduated from the University of Manchester with a degree in Computing and now live on the outskirts of Leeds working with you guessed it, Computers. I love all things gadgety but really dislike wires. For those of you who haven’t worked it out the name of the site is a combination of my nickname (Gaj) and the pronunciation ‘Gadget’.
