BBC release news app for iPhone

Despite some debate as to whether the BBC should be allowed to develop an app with tax-payers money, the BBC news app has rolled out onto the iPhone app store where it can download now for free.

There were also concerns raised by the Newspaper Publishers Association that free news apps such as this by large corporations may damage smaller news companies who rely on fees and advertisements to survive. The BBC news app has been worldwide for some time but has been held back from the UK until now.

The app contains all the news from the BBC News website and even includes the latest headlines rolling across the top of the screen and the option of live radio. But what's quite exciting about the app is that users can view embedded videos that wouldn't normally be allowed on an iPhone due to its flash restrictions.

The extra multimedia like the videos as well as features such as the ability to tweet, email etc news articles to friends, makes the app a great alternative to both other news apps and browsing through news websites on Safari.

The BBC are wasting no time in getting stuck into the world of mobile apps. They are proving to be a major developer, with Blackberry and Android versions of the app in the works as well as specific BBC Sport and iPlayer apps on the way.

So if you've got an iPhone why not give the news app a try whilst you wait for the next big BBC app to emerge.

An absolute tech junky, I graduated from the University of Manchester with a degree in Computing and now live on the outskirts of Leeds working with you guessed it, Computers. I love all things gadgety but really dislike wires. For those of you who haven’t worked it out the name of the site is a combination of my nickname (Gaj) and the pronunciation ‘Gadget’.
