HMV to Open Online Digital Download Store

HMV the top dog in high-street for all your music, film and gaming needs, have announced today they are planning an online digital MP3 download store this August and will look to take the goliath's that are Amazon and iTunes.

They have got their digital brothers 7Digital (who they bought a 50% share) to design the service and is compatible with MAC and Windows.

In terms of price it all sounds rather good, with singles coming in at 40p, while full albums will cost you £4.99, which seems very competitive to us - and they will feature artists each week which will see even bigger discounts, and were reliably informed that the first artist will Eminem, so if you have a penchant for gangsta rap then your needs will be served.

“We are delighted to launch a world class download store that reflects both HMV’s music retailing heritage and our strategy to be a broad-based entertainment brand,” said HMV’s head of online and digital Sarah Hughes.

"Our partners at 7digital have built for us a significantly improved new site that looks great and has never been easier to use. With so many innovative and wonderful features, it offers a truly intuitive and engaging customer experience that I very much hope will lead to HMV becoming a bigger player in the burgeoning digital market.”

No details have emerged of and exact date and whether this service will be a desktop app or browser store and how many songs it will have in its catalogue. But if half as good as 7Digital then we are fans already.

An absolute tech junky, I graduated from the University of Manchester with a degree in Computing and now live on the outskirts of Leeds working with you guessed it, Computers. I love all things gadgety but really dislike wires. For those of you who haven’t worked it out the name of the site is a combination of my nickname (Gaj) and the pronunciation ‘Gadget’.
