Video Calling is nothing new, but Apple's Facetime seems like the simple, useful video calling tool we have been waiting for. No more grainy faces, crackling sound and Krypton Factor software. One press of a button and you're in video chat even if you are already in a standard voice call.
The app, which works via Wi/Fi has been designed to make the best use of iPhone 4's two cameras and LED flash, promising the best lighting in any situation.
Promising stuff, however the app obviously only works when the person you are calling also has an iPhone 4 so the app is really quite limited unless you're part of an Apple loving family.
On the other hand, as we covered last week, John Lewis announced that the new iPod touch will come with Facetime (although this is not officially confirmed yet) which may prove a popular Christmas gift and thus increase the amount of Facetime users. Even so, you're never going to have a whole contact book of facetime-able people.
But don't let me sell it to you, here's the newly released adverts from the Facetime advertisement campaign and please don't ask us for the minute and a half of your life back afterwards.
What do you think, have Apple sold it to you? It looks like they are relying too much on their reputation and the hype surrounding a product. Someone watching who has no knowledge of Facetime will be left wondering what on earth Apple are trying to sell. What do you think…you Facetime virgins? Leave us your comments below…

I was mightily impressed with FaceTime when I watched the Apple Keynote presentation. However i was under the impression that iOS4 would bring FaceTime to 3GS and 3G too which would be great as they have cameras too. I was quite miffed when I found found it was iPhone 4 only.
It’s a good job that there are other video sharing apps out there for other phones – Knocking Live Video, Skype, Fring
– Apple, you do cripple your wonderful devices… so much?
Paul – you honestly thought that! you can’t have thought about it for long.
The idea of facetime is you can see each other’s faces at the same time. Considering the 3G and 3GS have rear mounted cameras either you would be able to see them or the would be able to see you, not at the same time.
You would have to stand facing a mirror to be able to be infront of the camera and see the screen.
Selfsilent – hi. Yeah I did think about it. Well, to be honest the 3GS does have camera and yes it’s a backward facing camera, however like you said it could be pointed at mirror. With FaceTime the camera that is uses can be changed to share what the back camera is pointing at – so why not on the 3G? Oh well there are other solutions available such as Knocking Live Video.
