Two gadgets in one for you today, and both focused around your feet! Some Back to the Future style trainers, and the new Heeleys…

Ok, first up, those Back to the Future trainers. Remember the scene in the first film where Marty McFly gets his new wardrobe? Which we all thought was so cool, but looking back really isn’t? Well some gadget affection-ado has taken the best of the tacky and created a pair of self tying shoes. Just a prototype, but as you can see from the YouTube video, when the wearer puts their foot in, the motor on the back kicks in due to the pressure and automatically tightens the laces. And they untighten at the touch of a button. Pretty cool if you late or just lazy.

Not a B2TF fan? How do you fancy a motorised version of Heeleys? You remember the wheeled shoes all the kids were rolling round on a few years back surely? I lost count of the amount of times I was nearly totalled by five year olds. And the annoying thing was, I just could not do it! I had a pair of those that clips to the back of your shoes to try and spent most of the time on my bum.

However, I think I may be more balanced if I got to test drive some Treadways, where the wheel is in the middle of your foot and the whole thing runs on motors. Creator Peter Treadway wants them to become the new alternative to cars for short journeys, and is entering them into the annual James Dyson Awards. If successful, they could be the next big craze. Watch the video charting their creation here.

Err….might be cool if you want 2 servos and an Arduino strapped to the back of each shoe. Seriously though, if you can’t do laces you can buy slip ons or shoes with velcro.

An absolute tech junky, I graduated from the University of Manchester with a degree in Computing and now live on the outskirts of Leeds working with you guessed it, Computers. I love all things gadgety but really dislike wires. For those of you who haven’t worked it out the name of the site is a combination of my nickname (Gaj) and the pronunciation ‘Gadget’.
