Want a way to kill your speed without killing anyone else? Got a mobile with Windows Mobile 5.0 or above, and £6.99 a year spare cash? Download yourself Speed Conscience then. This handy little ap can tell you what the speed on the road you’re travelling is, and what speed you’re actually doing. It’s then has a traffic light system to tell you if you’re speeding – green and you’re ok, amber and you’re push it, and red means slow down now. You can set your warning limits and even set your vehicle type, since different vehicles have different speed restrictions on different roads (ooh I’m channeling my theory test revision here!). It means you can concentrate on watching the road too, without getting distracted by your speedometer.
Research out this month from Brake the road safety charity indicates that 36% of us are doing 35mph in 30mph zones daily or at least once a week. Think that’s not really a problem? Well they’ve worked out that if you hit a child at 35mph you knock them down with same force as if they’d fallen backwards off the balcony of a fifth floor apartment building onto concrete. Can’t really think of a better reason that that can you?
