Sony PS3 Firmware Update 3.21 Available to Download: Linux Users – Will You Give it Try?

The Sony PS3 firmware 3.21 update has been in the spotlight for all the wrong reasons recently.

Firstly, Sony announced that the PS3 update will not include the ‘Install Other OS" option. Then a few days ago Geohot, the famous hacker displayed his support for the disgruntled ‘Other OS’ PS3 users, namely Linux and said he would try and find a hack to help them with this problem.

So apart from Sony PS3 disabling the "Install Other OS" feature, what will the update include? Well, the update is compulsory for users who want to carry on using the PlayStation Network or other media games that need the new system software, which has alienated the ‘Other OS’ users. In term of actually adding new features, there appears to be very little.

  • I’m not upgrading. At least not in the short term. I won’t miss PSN at all, nor MS Home, online gaming…. Meh! It’s filled the odd boring evening I suppose & I did enjoy a rattle at team R6 Vegas when I first bought the system. I can live without it.

I am mightily annoyed about the fact that I probably wont be able to play new releases, even in single player though.

Most of all I’m brassed off by the fact that Sony are arbitrarily removing a feature which I both value and have paid for. Like many others I will be registering my disdain by seeking reparation through legal channels. I’m not overly hopeful of a succesful outcome there.

Which of course leaves me only one real option, join the ‘underground’ and adopt whatever solution they can offer… If any.

Already we see workarounds published widely for PSN access while still using 3.15, so I’m rather more hopeful that the ‘unofficial’ route will offer me what I want in the future.

I’m sure Sony wont miss me as a customer and following this debacle I certainly wont miss them as a supplier.

  • the fact that they are removing features i use is completely ridiculous. i use linux because my choice was ps3 or laptop… and i hate windows. i will not be upgrading.

To whom this new update HARMS i.e. people who are using the Sony ps3 as a hub not for entertainment but for the purpose of a business and livelihood.

My business has for the past few years used the PS3 as a tool used in my personal company using Yellow Dog Linux as it’s primary OS. To add of course the ability to play games on this same machine as originally billed is a plus which with the 600 dollars i spent purchasing this “Home Computer Entertainment System” it is a distinct advantage option in my work and life in terms of cost efficiency to have an ” All In One” machine . With this system costing just 600 I have trumped the industry by not having to spend 800 to 1000 dollars on a HP, Compaq Presario, Sony Viao, Toshiba, or one of the many other Home PC’s offered at distinctly higher prices.

I make a great argument in this firmware update’s ability to limit my machine’s potential as well as it’s ability to hurt my business considering the sales pitch this machine was given with the abilities it is capable of. this update if not installed will keep me from playing online, limit the potential of the games i have purchased through PSN as well as the 43 games i have purchased on hard disk and nullifing my ability to purchase games in the future. so for those who are not just playing games our options would be to take another loss and either

    1. Buy another computer to dispel the problem costing me more money and LOSING the money spent on Yellow Dog Linux which is built for the PS3 and go forth with the update or…

    2. Buy a new PS3 just to play games on costing me another 300 dollars thus bringing my total money spent to 900. 600 for the computer and 300 for a PS3

getting off the phone after over an hour with SCEA customer service rep ” Idanne” who calls herself The Supervisor of Consumer Services 1-800-345-7669 their ability to compensate me for my loss is ” not in their hands” but apparently they will take this issue with people who use PS3 for business solutions at a later time within 48 hours of this posting.
But their rebuttals for this problem abiet not flat out telling me to either buy a new ps3 or a new computer but to take my stored data and back it up to another Hard Drive in order to keep it.

And in my response to that miserable pitch i asked what good is it to have this information which is completely useless on another computer sit and take up space for no good reason.

she could not answer that. And in a follow up phone call she could not help that as well I am giving them till 5pm Friday April 2nd 2010 to come up with a viable solution that does not require me to spend any more money.

So my friends i call to you to hop on this Lawsuit i am filing in 48 hours, or the next business day, and demand Sony either remove this terrible option to limit our machines potential by abolishing the new update or, give us a new computer preferably a Sony Viao with the same processor that the ps3 has, or reimburse us for the money spent on the PS3 600 us dollars, yellow dog Linux 100 us dollars with adjustments to inflation of course. or find another way to compensate us for the loss we will have just by installing this update equal to those amounts paid.
Please send your e-mails who wish to hop on to Directorjoefazio@gmail.com and i will be in contact with you.
UNITE AGAINST TYRANNY AND OPPRESSION and tell Sony to deal with pu**y boy hackers another way.

I haven’t yet used the other OS support but I might some day.

IMO it really is bad judgement from sony to treat its customers like this and dropping features out all the time.

    There are numerous

I’m realy starting to be fed up with having to deal with Sony
s crappy UI and starting to hope this thing will get cracked so I can use the full power and use other media SW on it… On Linux if nothing else…

it really doesn’t bother me that i can’t keep linux, though it probably should and i see why it bothers others. my grief is that i need to format before i can update before i can format i need to synch my trophies and before ican do that i need to sign in and before i can do that i need to update.

I will not update. If Sony no longer wants my money for buying the content they sell online so be it.
I will switch to PC games instead with a new PC system
Also since I am switching to PC I will aslo stop buying new games for my PS3.
