Samsung Omnia: Debuted for the second time

A month ago we did a preview of the new Samsung Omnia (meaning ‘everything’ in Latin and ‘wish’ in Arabic), and concluded that it did a pretty god job in its aim to grant you everything you could wish for in a mobile phone. Last night, we attended the official launch of the phone, which was interestingly timed as it has already been available in UK shops for the last few weeks.

We were treated to a holographic presentation of the Omnia’s features which made powerpoint seem as old school as the first Apple iPhone. Afterwards we had another chance to get our hands on the phone to see if still posed a threat to what is already a flooded market.

The details and features of this phone, were covered in our last post on it. I must say though that I really like the Omnia, but I have one rather major problem with it- it’s not Mac compatible. For an Apple fiend like myself, that renders a lot of its synchronising features useless, which is a shame really as in the end, I’m left wishing for a bit more with this phone.

  • Is not due to the operating system being Windows, the iPhone is only compatible with Windows due to Apple making an application that is windows frendly a.k.a iTunes, which is due in part to Microsoft letting developers create applications like this.

If Apple released the code to allow developers to do this, I recon phones like this would be able to synchronise to a Mac.

God never thought i’d be digging Microsoft lol

  • I think your absolutely right. There are too many phones out there that just don’t offer Mac compatibility.

But what I didn’t know is that this is an issue with Apple itself an not the phone manufacturers so thanks for the heads up Arutha.

  • Samsung Omnia is buggest disappointment of the year from Samsung, its big disaster, super flop, with lots of bugs and due to operator software the functionality of the omnia is degraded specially from Vodafone uk
buy any other phone except Samsung Omnia

in all the review on the entire website its proved as most hated and bugull of phone which is released by Samsung in hurry without proper testing,

  • Well, interestingly enough I was speaking to a few people from Samsung at this launch party and the general feeling was that they were personally more impressed with the previously released Tocco rather than the Omnia.

  • Is not the Omnia the big daddy of the Tocco? They were prob not impressed due to the fact that the Tocco already came with the brilliant touch screen that is now on the Omnia and as for the 5 MP camera that’s been done etc.

But if you ask me the Omnia could wipe the floor with the Tocco in a fight, what has the Tocco got that the Omnia has not?

Except the fact that’s its smaller, but that in turn feds back to my big daddy theory.

All in all I think the feeling was more incline towards people who were looking for something new but didn’t get it, for a techie this phone is a dream it combines everything you want and does it so seamlessly.

  • It wasn’t that the Tocco had better features, but that they felt it competes more directly with the Apple iPhone whose market everyone wants a piece of.

The Omnia is by far the better phone of the two in terms of spec, but it is therefore more expensive and is likely to not sell as well as the Tocco.

i have owned the samsung omnia now for three weeks,it really is a awesome phone,i dont know what the bugs are on it,but mine as run like a dream.really is as good as the i phone, with a lot more stuff, great camera and awesome video recorder.

  • I have had the Omnia as well for a week or so and i love it. It is my favorite phone i have ever used. I have not received any problems other than not being able to connect to a mac. I have no regrets in getting this phone.

  • Being an older guy who is having an awful time keeping up with today’s technology, what I appreciate most about the Omnia is the intuitiveness of it. It’s fun to use; it’s easy to use; and it’s not hard to figure out. When I have a question that the manual doesn’t cover sufficiently, I just go to google and ask. Results have been great (having an iMac is what brought me here). As it turns out, my cheap Vista laptop can now be used at times other than during travel thanks to my Omnia.

The manual points out the fact that it’s good to be able to put photos from its excellent 5 megapixel camera onto the internally mounted micro SD card. The only problem is, it doesn’t tell you how to do that. It only tells you how to transfer photos from your computer to the Omnia’s SD card. So this is my only complaint so far, the Omnia can’t store its photos directly onto the SD card. You must send the photos from the Omnia to your computer then back to the Omnia’s SD card. I was looking forward to transferring photos directly from my Omnia to the SD card slot in my television.

This is an amazing phone/web browser/camera/exel and Word tool/email tool/iPod equivelent/etc. … I really do love this gadget.

Oh, I read the comments about Omnia bugs. So far, I haven’t found a single one (unless you want to call the photo to SD issue a bug). One thing I’m appreciating is the long life of its battery. On learning something like this, a lot of hours go into practicing. The battery holds up beautifully. In a few days I should be receiving my Omnia to TV connector. It’ll be nice to show my non-technical friends some of, for instance, those really excellent YouTube presentations.

  • Im glad your liking the phone KenJr, as I was reading your comment I noticed you said you are having problems storing your photos on your memory card, well I might just have the solution for you just follow the steps below

    1) Start the camera just like you were taking a quick photo

    2) On the menu screen on the left there will be an icon that looks like a clog and spanner, click on this

    3) now your on the setting screen, click on the icon that looks like a clog and spanner once again

    4) Your first option to change should be ‘Default Storage’ if you click on that you should be able to change where your photo/videos are saved, my memory card is called ‘My Storage’ on my phone

    5) Click ‘OK’ to save your changes

And there we go all your snaps should now be saved on the memory card instead of the phones internal memory. If you have any more questions please feel free to ask

  • Thank you Arutha. Yea! Success! Your procedure for transferring Omnia photos to the SD card works just fine.

    You are amazing!

    Thanks again.

IF you want a program that will allow your Omnia to sync with Mac use this,

    store.markspace.com

they have a software that is able to sync up any device that runs Windows Mobile 6 to your Mac.

  • I hate and I mean HATE this phone! I can not navigate with the “stylus” or by touch. The touch feature on this phone is the worst ever, I have dialed so many people that I did not mean to call! The touch screen is not “spot on”, it’s about 3/4 of an inch off and never know what I am going to get when I want to perform a function. I rotating screen thing is about 10 seconds behind my life. I could go on and on, it’s going back that’s for sure, what a piece of junk!!

  • Four months ago I wrote glowingly of this phone. Here’s an update. My earlier comments were naively phrased. Whatever the antonym of, ‘glowingly” is, that’s the way I feel about it now. I’d go into the details but I have neither the time nor inclination. There’s nothing I like about this phone. Oh, you can do lots of things with it but doing them is a pain in the ass. Now I’m just trying to figure out how to dump it without taking too much of a financial bath.

  • Well thanks for coming back to let us know Ken,it can be helpful for people that come across these reviews in the future.

Sorry that you’re handset isn’t quite all you had hoped for, I too came to the same conclusion when I managed to get my hands on a review handset a few months back…what are you thinking about changing it in for?
