Since the US launch of the Google Nexus Phone earlier this month, there have been a massive flurry of complaints from various consumers regarding the phone’s ‘spotty’ 3G problems.
After doing some initial research, Google found that part of the reason why people were having these ‘teething’ problems was because T-Mobile has a much smaller 3G footprint compared to some of the larger US carriers, which meant that the 3G connectivity couldn’t cope with the demand.
However, the bad news doesn’t stop there, because Google have now also reported that the reason for some of these issues is due to a software error on the Nexus One’s 3G radio. I know it all seems like a long list of woes for the Nexus One, however there maybe a silver light at the end of the tunnel as Google have announced that they are working hard with HTC engineers to test and fix the problem, with suggestions that an ‘over-the-air’ update could be available “in the next week or so”.
I am sure that we are all happy that Google have found the crux of the problem, however what lessons can be learnt when the phone decides to hit the UK market soon? As Vodafone could be the official carrier of the Nexus One phone in the UK, let’s hope that Google and Vodafone can learn from their mistakes in the US and make the Nexus One a better user experience for us in the UK.
