There are literally hundreds of broadband deals out there at the moment, and it can be quite a daunting task to compare broadband deals if you don't know what you are looking for. Here is the list of the top 5 broadband bundles as voted for by the general public:

1. BT Broadband Option 1

This package is the standard package offered by BT Broadband and is ideal for families and casual internet users. This package offers up to 20Mbps of connection speed and is available in 12 or 18 month contracts. The download limit is 10GB, which will be enough for most users and BT's customer service is great if you have any problems. The popular BT Home Hub is also available for a limited period for customers that place their order over the internet. The 18 month deal costs just £7.78 per month for the first 3 months and £15.65 after for the duration of the contract, while the 12 month package costs £15.65 per month.

2. Talk Talk Broadband Essentials

Talk Talk's starter package combines the internet and phone calls in one package, with connection speeds of up to 8Mbps and a download limit of 40GB, this package will suit most users. Unlimited evening and weekend calls are also included, all for just £6.49 per month. There are also a range of bolt-ons that can be added to the package such as, Turbo Boost (£4 per month) that can boost your speed up to 24Mbps and the Mega Download Boost (£4 per month) that doubles your download limit to 80GB.

3. Virgin Media Broadband L

This package requires you to have cable in your area, which may not be suitable for everyone, but does offer up to 10Mbps connection speeds and an unlimited download limit (fair usage rules apply) perfect for households with more than one demanding internet user. The Virgin Media Broadband L package comes bundled with a free wireless router and PC Total Guard security package. This package starts at £5 per month for the first 3 months (£14 thereafter) if taken with a Virgin phone line which costs £11 a month.

4. O2 Standard Broadband

O2's value package offers up to 8Mbps connection speeds and unlimited download limit. It comes bundled with a free wireless router and McAfee Anti-Virus software and if you are an O2 mobile customer it costs just £7.34 a month ( £12.50 for non O2 mobile members). Contract length is 12 months and the package is subject to having a BT phone line (approximately £12.50 a month.

5. AOL Wireless Broadband with E + W

The new broadband Evening + Weekend package from AOL is their entry-level deal and includes a free wireless router, up to 8Mbps speed and 10GB download allowance, as well as free evening and weekend phone calls. This 18 month package also includes AOL's exclusive range of anti-virus and fire wall applications, helping you stay safe while surfing the net.

  • Actually, I terminated my Virgin broadband service after discovering their fair usage rules unsuitable for households with _any_ demanding internet user.
