Do you remember the 80s? The music, the films and of course the home computer. Little plastic machines connected to your telly with blocky graphics. Well now you can relive those days on your iPhone with the official release of the Commodore 64 iPhone Application.
The app, which was previously rejected by Apple, is now available sans the Basic interpreter, which Apple deemed in violation of the SDK agreement. This under £3 app reproduces an authentic C64 experience that you can take everywhere.
The Commodore 64 emulator is officially licensed from both rights holders of the Commodore ROMs and the individual games bundled which include Dragons Den, Le Mans, Jupiter Lander, Arctic Shipwreck, and Jack Attack.
Manomio, the developers of the app, plan on offering additional games, like Bruce Lee and International Karate, for sale and download. But don’t think you can just dig out your old games from the attic or even find some C64 memory dumps on the Internet. The emulator only allows you to run games that are officially released by the developers.
The C64 emulator caused a stir earlier this year when Apple rejected it because it allow arbitrary code to be run using the Commodore BASIC interpreter. To get around this the company released a slightly modified version with the basic interpreter disabled. If you try to enter the basic interpreter you get a friendly message explaining that it has been disabled and not to despair as it should be re-enabled in a later version.
