Motormouse- with backing from Dragons Den.

motormouseI don’t know if any of you saw the finale of Dragons Den earlier this week, but one of the products that caught the eye of the Gaj-it team was the Motormouse. Designed by British entrepreneurs Patti and David Bailey (apparently after David received a car topped novelty 50th birthday cake!) the Motormouse is a wireless mouse for car enthusiasts. On the show it was given a £120,000 backing by James Caan.

The idea is devilishly simple. Aimed at car enthusiasts everywhere, especially executive ones since this gadget is pitched as one of those executive playthings, the Motormouse is shaped like a classic sports car, and moves on little rubber wheels just like the toy cars we all had as kids. Then it gets a little cooler. The bonnet becomes the left and right mouse buttons, and a spare tire provides a nice scroll wheel. Then comes the really cool bit- the boot actually flips open like it would on an actual car and that’s where not only the batteries go, but also where you store the worlds smallest 2.4G wireless receiver. This you simply plug into your computer when using the mouse, and then return to the boot when it’s not in use, so you’re much less likely to lose it- or leave it at work to be nicked!

Only the generic sports car is available at the moment, for £29.99. But the pair intend to partner up with major car manufacturers and make mini versions of real cars- so some day you may be able to own a Ferrari without it costing an arm and a leg! £35.99 is the price predicted for the final licensed cars. A little pricey, but if they could get it down it’d be a good competitor in the world of wireless mice.

Car shaped mice have been around for years, I’m amazed that they got any money at all for this old idea.

  • “moves on little rubber wheels just like the toy cars we all had as kids” So it just rolls forwards and backwards then??

  • @selfsilent- I think the point isn’t the design. I think the backing was more because of their marketing ideas. Plus there’s the extra design features- the worlds smallest wireless adaptor for example- which make it differ from other car mice. I did say the same thing until I read more about it though!

@Dan- You obviously never had the same toys as me! I could get some proper movement out of my cars :)

  • Thanks for your feedback – there isn’t another car mouse of this quality on the market today – The tech spec is far superior – a fact recognised by the Dragons. We know as we have bought every thing else on the market to test – they don’t even come close! Why not buy one and try it! x

  • I purchased the Motor Mouse – it uses 2.4Ghz wireless signal coupled with a tiny USB receiver.

The idea to have the boot of the car open and allow the batteries to be stored, as well as keep the USB receiver if not in use, is clever.

Other nice touches include a high-quality mouse mat and protective cloth bag to carry the mouse around in.

Finally, the packaging is a cut above the other producst with a high quality presentation gift box.

  • Excellent product at first, however the battery dies quite quickly. I brought the mouse about 2-3 months ago and already it is messing up, every time i put in new batteries the orange light flashes as soon i put the new batteries in as though the battery is dying. Not a very good product in the long.

I just love the idea, yes there are similar out there but none that look so authentic and are built around quality. I love the mini, just disappointed I can’t buy it online from Australia! Good luck to you both Patti and David!

An absolute tech junky, I graduated from the University of Manchester with a degree in Computing and now live on the outskirts of Leeds working with you guessed it, Computers. I love all things gadgety but really dislike wires. For those of you who haven’t worked it out the name of the site is a combination of my nickname (Gaj) and the pronunciation ‘Gadget’.
