Mobile Phone Directory 118800 Suspended

Controversial new mobile phone directory service 118 800 (www.118800.co.uk) has been temporarily suspended, after thousands of users flocked online to remove their details from the site.118-800

The mobile phone directory service launched less than a month ago, allowing users to request a name and mobile number of any given person for £1.

To build its collection of contacts, 118 800 used market research firms and online businesses that require customers to leave their contacts. According to the Telegraph, the company managed to collect the personal details of up to 16 million mobile numbers through these methods.

This sparked privacy concerns among people whose numbers were listed without any direct consent being given, making it no surprise that so many people have logged on to remove their details from the site.

The message currently displayed on the 118 800 site says it is undergoing major developments and will be "back as soon as possible with the new improved service".

If you’ve already sent in your request to be removed from the directory there is no need to resubmit it, as the company will action all requests once the server is available again.

If you do want to check or remove your details, to avoid a bombardment of telesales or to keep off the radar of a particularly annoying ex, the website www.118800.co.uk will be up and running again tomorrow.

  • Hello, Joe from 118800.co.uk here.

The website has been taken down for some essential maintenance work to be carried out, in order for us to improve the service we offer our customers. Any requests to opt out of the service before the site was taken down will still be carried out so there is no need to opt out again.

Just to reassure you that we’ll never actually give out anyone’s personal details. When you search on 118800.co.uk, we’ll send an SMS message to the person you’re looking for, giving them your contacts details and it is then up to you if you wish to call them back or not.

We are genuinely interested in getting peoples feedback so that we can shape the service to make sure people are comfortable with it and for the service to be as useful and reliable as possible.

If you have any questions or concerns, please contact us on contact@118800.co.uk

    Thanks,

    Joe

  • Just tried it, still not working.

    Oh! What a surprise!!

  • Joe from 118 800:

Your own CEO admitted on the BBC’s Working Lunch 14/7 that this data was made live on the Internet without proper testing. How can the public feel assured that proper security measures have been taken to prevent any hacking into your servers, which contain thousands of confidential records from people who don’t want to be on your database?

  • As the site to opt out was suspended I missed the opportunity to opt out. I hope I can have my number taken off the register site of 11880. When will that be?

  • Dear s king,

We are working hard to get the new service online. When the service is back online, you will be able to opt out.

We apologies for any inconvenience caused.

    Many thanks,

    Joe

  • I have 3 contract mobile phones of which 2 are my childrens, We are a family with autism.

If we get any calls from your service we will be cancelling our contracts and 118800 can pay up the remainding contracts.

I have not authorised for anyone to have my number when I signed my mobile phone contracts.

Already we don`t answer our house phone because of nuisance calls, Mobiles are personal and a way to get away from people who we don`t want to talk with otherwise they would also be friends on our mobile lists.

Hope the service shuts down, Go make money with something people want instead of forcing something people don`t want.

    P J

An absolute tech junky, I graduated from the University of Manchester with a degree in Computing and now live on the outskirts of Leeds working with you guessed it, Computers. I love all things gadgety but really dislike wires. For those of you who haven’t worked it out the name of the site is a combination of my nickname (Gaj) and the pronunciation ‘Gadget’.
