I still don’t have the Internet. I’m currently writing this from the university computer room, where in two days time I actually stop being a student according to my ID card. Once they stop letting me in here I’m going to have to go on a WiFi hunt. To McDonalds!
Well, if I don’t want to spend my Internet time surrounded by hyped up kids (it’s the summer holidays) and come out feeling a little greasier than before, I could do with a WiFi spotter. Cool as a WiFi Tshirt would be it would need washing, so Play’s WiFi Hotspot Finder Keyring might be more what I’m looking for when I need to check those all important job offer emails (or at least some kind of offer emails…)
With a range of 60 meters and the ability to detect 802.11b, 802.11b and 802.11g at a press of a button, there’d be no need to either sign spot or pull out my laptop and wander the streets aimlessly (lets face it, that’ll get you mugged). Four green LEDs indicate the strength of the signal (four being excellent, one being don’t try and download anything important). There’s also a red LED to indicate no signal (I bet no lights would make you think the batteries had run out).
The whole search apparently takes just two seconds of your time, which is much faster than booting up your laptop and praying. The downside is that if you want a stronger signal you will have to take the time to work out where it’s coming from, plus there’s no guarantee that once you find the signal it won’t be password protected and require you to start over again. But if nothing else you can check that the cafe declaring itself WiFi enabled is actually any good before you order the expensive latte…
