We’ve finally had our chance to look at the latest offerings from the new USB 3.0, which has been confirmed by Intel Implementers on their forums.
How Fast is It?
Officially 10 times faster than the current USB 2.0 this can be used on a majority of PC and console devices.
While the current 2.0 devices will run at 480MB the new 3.0 will run at an astonishing 4.8GB, so for those non technical people reading this, Intel has stated that while a current 27GB HD movie will take around 15 minutes to transfer onto a USB 2.0 device, the new USB 3.0 will take only 70 seconds to do the same job.
New Features?
While the current 2.0 has but one pair of data transfer lanes which means that writing and reading is done at the same time, the new 3.0 will have their own separate lanes which means that reading and writing are done independently of each other.
As well as this the new 3.0 build will use more power. This due to the fact that the sheer number of USB devices people use now and they all need power, which mean USB modems are less likely to reset.
If you’re concerned about the environment and them ever increasing energy bills then there’s no need to as the 3.0 system is energy efficient because it offers standby qualities so it will only use power when it is needed.
Will my Old Devices still Work?
The answer to this question is a yes. Just like the old USB 1.0 devices worked on the then new 2.0 system, USB 3.0 will be backwards compatible so you won’t see any difference speed wise but at least your gamepad will still work.

That is really amazing so I thought I’d check out their availability and think we probably won’t see any of these till next year or 2010 (from cnet). However the good news is the prototype actually works
