Pay-As-You-Go has always been the cheap way to monitor your monthly phone expenditure, but you don’t often get many decent deals like free minutes with your £20 of top-up. On the flip side, you may not want to commit to a monthly phone contract for fear of getting into a long-term relationship that you know will go nowhere in the end. Like when you were 16.
Orange has taken a step to give you the add-on benefits of a contract, without asking too much from your bank account with its new £5 per month tariff.
For the same price as coffee and a sandwich, you will receive a Nokia 2630, which isn’t the flashiest pf phones but still features a VGA camera, FM radio, Bluetooth, and a WAP browser for internet access. You may not look cool while you check your emails, but you’ll still be able to check them.
You also get 50 free minutes and 50 free texts on this bargain basement plan, which is enough to plan all of your Friday drinks for the month.
There is a bit of a catch though, for paying such a small sum each month, you will be locked in for a whopping three years. Unfortunately the lowest-cost contract in the UK is attached to the longest-duration contract.
There is a bright side however, as after 18 months of commitment you will be eligible for a handset upgrade to the equivalent specification of the Nokia 2630. Basically you need to commit to this plan for longer than Michael Jackson can remain married, and you’ll score an upgrade prize!
Another word of warning, if you’re a heavy phone user, this plan may work out more expensive in the long-run. Calls outside the contract’s allowance cost a staggering 25p per minute and texts cost 15p each. Any unused allowances do not roll over to the following month.
If you’re laughing in the face of a £5 tarrif, but not hysterically, Orange also has pretty affordable £10 and £15 per month plans with more minutes and texts, and flashier handsets to choose from.
