Gorillapod- a tripod, but bendier

gorillapodI’m always behind the camera. If I want a photo of everyone I’m out with, I generally have to stay off it myself. Mostly because I’m paranoid that if you ask someone to take the photo for you these days, they’ll run off with it. A mini tripod is the obvious answer, and I do have a cheap one. Unfortunately it isn’t great on anything other than perfectly flat ground. Which is hard to find if you’re out and about having fun.

But whats that in the trees? It looks like an alien from War of the Worlds, but no- it’s a Gorillapod!

The Gorillapod has flexible legs which wrap around poles, tree branches or even your arm, or can be posed at odd angles to make your camera stand level on uneven ground. Then simply press the self timer, swing out of the tree like it’s namesake, and run back to the group shot.

(Side note. Why Gorilla- I didn’t think Gorilla’s really climbed trees that flexibility. I guess that baboonpod just didn’t sound right.)

The Gorillapod comes with an adapter to screw into your camera’s regular tripod attachy bit, which you can leave attached and just slide into place on the Gorillapod ready for action. The legs are ultra flexible and made up of smoothly rotating balls, so it can be twisted into any position imaginable. Think of the possibilities for your MySpace photos! Now you can take weird perspective shots instead of just the usual arms length ones. Better get the eye make up and hair gel out.

On a more serious note, Firebox claim that the Gorillapod is recommended by professional photographers as a cool way to get the most out of your camera. So once the sun comes out, get yourself to the zoo and attach it to the railings for some couple filled shots. Just make sure the Gorilla’s don’t steal it….

  • I’ve had my Gorillapod for a few years ago, and I swear by it – Perfect for attaching to trees for taking photos in the park, especially in light of this recent spell of lovely weather.

I love all things gadgety but really dislike wires. For those of you who haven’t worked it out the name of the site is a combination of my nickname (Gaj) and the pronunciation ‘Gadget’.
