flu-virus-e06074-gaIt seems that the web-based on-line threat is still growing. An article on ZDNet claims that malicious sites have increased 200% in the last month alone. The increase in threats have come from websites containing images with injected scripts, and emails also containing infected  images. To make matters worse, 61.6% of web based malware is new according to figures from MessageLabs.

In terms of spam, the usual two take the top space with the USA relaying 19.8%, and China relaying 9.9% of all penis pill related mail according to security firm Sophos. This is coming at a time when Conficker may have, by the time you read this, delivered whatever surprise it had in store.  Depending on what you read, Conficker is, or was, designed to download the next bit of code, and execute it on April 1st 09.

All seems  a bit bleak, but remember, Conficker has been about for a while now, and Microsoft has released updates previously that patch the Server service that Conficker exploits. Also all AV vendors worthy of the name, have virus identity files coming out their ears that can detect this. You may also not be aware that Conficker could potentially go into action at any time after April 1st, and that action could be to do nothing. What we do know is that the next course of action for a PC infected with the Conficker worm is that it will try and make contact with a potential 50,000-a-day call-home web servers from which it might receive updates.

So the usual advice applies, make sure your OS is up to date with patches and AV. Even Mac and *nix users may want to take note as they may be immune from Windows viruses, but they can spread them. Don’t open unknown attachments and yadda, yadda, yadda. If you experience any Conficker fun after April 1st let us know,or if you have any tips, write them below.

An absolute tech junky, I graduated from the University of Manchester with a degree in Computing and now live on the outskirts of Leeds working with you guessed it, Computers. I love all things gadgety but really dislike wires. For those of you who haven’t worked it out the name of the site is a combination of my nickname (Gaj) and the pronunciation ‘Gadget’.
