This is a really sweet concept…
Being a full time student (for the next couple of months anyway) I have the classic student kitchen. A number of gadgets in there never get used (The George Foreman Grill is fantastic if you can be bothered, and who really uses a sandwich toaster anyway?) and surface space is highly sought after, what with it being taken up by every cup, plate and cooking utensil we own. (Don’t look at me- my job is bathroom duty and that place is clean!)
That’s why I love the idea of the Electrolux Personal Mini Kitchen. It’s a fully contained unit for one person, which combines a very mini fridge (You can just about fit one can in there) plus storage space for raw and cooked foods. And it has a roll out cooking mat underneath, with sections dedicated to boiling, frying and heating. And it has serving ware in a black box. AND it has a touch screen, internet ready tablet for messaging and looking up recipes and even ordering from Tescos.
Let’s recap. In one unit, which is about the size of a portable TV (the old chunky ones, not a new flat screen obviously) you get hot and cold storage; a mini hob, stuff to eat from and the ability to talk to your friends over webcam as you dine. The only thing it doesn’t do is wash up and writing your essays.
I absolutely love this idea. It was invented by the Chinese, who are apparently seeing a growth in the number of young people living alone. If every student owned one, then there’d be no need for any of us to live in squalor, as we inevitably seem to do. I think the ability to clean up after yourself must come with having your own house personally. The place would be tidy and you could find stuff and it’d all look lovely and nice and there’d be much more room for the booze at house parties. I mean, it’d be a lot more impressive when your parents call round. Of course.
Not sure if its just a concept or if these are actually on sale, but if I hear anything I’ll be saving up the hard earned pennies.
